What is a LAMP server?

LAMP is an acronym for Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. A server that is comprised of these applications as its main components is often referred to as a LAMP server. The Linux MPS Core is a LAMP server as it comes with these components installed and ready to use as part of its default configuration.

How is Linux MPS Core different from Linux MPS?

Linux MPS Core comes with minimal core applications making it versatile and easily flexible for single application configurations or complete hosting solutions. Linux MPS Core features package update options for complete control of how and when core applications (including additional applications installed via yum) are updated. Options include a self managed or auto update option.

Linux MPS comes with standard core applications ready for complete hosting solutions. Core application updates are managed automatically for you.

What OS and default core applications are installed on the Linux MPS Core?

The Linux MPS Core server is running Cent OS 5.x. Core applications consist of Apache, MySQL5.0.x, PHP-5.1.6, OpenSSH, OpenSSL, ProFTP, Dovecot, Sendmail, Perl, Python, and GCC.

How do I access my server?

The Linux MPS Core server can be accessed via SSH. In addition, if you selected to have Webmin installed when the server was ordered you can access the server via Webmin.

Is an admin user provided with Linux MPS Core?

No, when you order a Linux MPS Core server only the root user is created. You can create admin user(s) as needed.

Is CPX available with Linux MPS Core?

No, CPX is not available with Linux MPS Core. However, there are many 3rd party control panels available for you to choose from and install using yum. One popular control panel called Webmin is available. When ordering your server you can choose to have Webmin installed automatically for you or you can install Webmin manually at a later date using the instructions found in the Linux MPS Core User Guide.

What applications can I run within my account?

You have full access to repositories, yum, and rpms. You can install any software package available.

Note: Only applications installed via yum will be included in the automatic updates.

How is MySQL Configured?

The default installation of MySQL is configured to not listen to any external ports; only localhost. If you decide to configure MySQL to use an external port, we recommend that you take steps necessary (including setting a password) to secure your MySQL before enabling this feature.

How does Linux MPS Core handle DNS and IP configuration compared to Linux MPS?

Linux MPS Core features the ability to manually add and configure domains and IPs with only the applications you want to use them with such as the Apache configuration file or Sendmail. In addition, a third party control panel can be installed to automate the process for you.

Linux MPS features Virtual Focus's proprietary utilities (v-commands) or the CPX Control Panel to guide you through adding and configuring domains and IPs.

Are backups available?

For your convenience, we provide a daily copy of your data in a backup directory associated with your server. You are ultimately responsible for maintaining current backups of all your important data. We strongly recommend making periodic backups of your site and data to your local computer or some other offsite location.
